Changing your name in BC
After marriage, you have the right to use your spouse's
surname. Or you can choose to continue using your own surname.
If you do choose to change your name, you need to do some
of the “Change of Name” work yourself to update all the necessary legal
records. (You need to make the following changes if you want to use
a hyphenated surname too.) Click the link to the Web resources below
to find out how to do it correctly.

By the way, changing you name does NOT effect your birth records, so you can change your name back to your
pre-marriage surname any time you want.
Changing your name:
On your Social Insurance Number card
Fill out the Application for SIN / Replacement SIN Card
form and take it to the Human Resources Development Canada office:
4th floor, 757 W. Hastings Street, Vancouver. You can download the
form in advance from HRDC Website (click the link below). Make sure
you bring your original marriage certificate and birth certificate.

On your Driver's License
Just go to any Driver Service Centre in BC with the right documentation
(old driver's licence, your marriage certificate and birth certificate):

On your utility bills (Telus, Shaw, BC Hydro...)
Fax them a copy of the marriage certificate with your
old and new names and your account number. Sometimes there's an “administrative”
fee to make the change.
